Small Kitchen Remodeling in Phoenix, AZ

Eight steps, in this order, on every small kitchen project.

1. 1Walkthrough and measure. We take the actual dimensions, not an estimate.
2. 2Layout options. Two or three ways the room could work, with the trade-offs named.
3. 3Written scope and price. Firm numbers once we have measured and you have picked a direction.
4. 4Permits. Filed for any wall, plumbing, or electrical change.
5. 5Demolition and rough-in. Old cabinets and any wall come out first.
6. 6Cabinets, then counters. Boxes go in plumb and level, then the stone gets templated off them.
7. 7Tile, lighting, and fixtures. Backsplash, range hood, under-cabinet lighting, sink.
8. 8Walkthrough and punch list. We check storage and clearances before we call it done.

A small kitchen costs less to remodel than a large one for a plain reason. There's less of it — fewer linear feet of cabinets, less counter, less floor. That does not mean every corner is safe to cut.

What actually moves the number is the scope. Does a wall come out? Does plumbing or a range hood vent move? Add in the cabinet finish, box quality, and countertop material. We price the room after we measure it. Then we walk you through the smart moves and the false economies. A pull-out pantry insert costs little against the cabinet box it lives in. Moving a sink drain in a slab-on-grade house does not.

A tiny, closed-off kitchen has one advantage in a hot climate: it keeps cooking heat out of the rest of the house. Open it up, and you trade a storage problem for a ventilation one. That's a fair trade, as long as the range hood is sized to handle it.

A hood vented to the exterior, never recirculated back into the room, does the real work here. An undersized or recirculating hood leaves cooking heat and grease in a house already fighting outdoor heat most of the year. A cold-climate kitchen has the opposite worry: heat loss, not heat load. Larger hoods can call for a make-up air unit under Phoenix's building code. We size that during design, not after the cabinets are in.

One more honest note. Opening a wall changes what the room asks of your AC, now that it's cooling a larger connected space. We flag that before we start, not after the first July bill.
